Robert Donnell Presbytery – Church Camp 2014

Dates: 7/7 – 7/11

The kids of GCPC and the entire Robert Donnell Presbytery completed church camp and everyone had a blast. The instructors made small group time fun and engaging with the kids. There were many different activities that made church camp exciting – canoeing, rock wall climbing, and swimming. We have some great pictures and feel free to share with friends and family.

Also, I would like to thank our GCPC members and our sister churches for helping with church camp.

Fall Creek Falls Youth Event

WHEN: 10/9-10/12
Where: Fall Creek Falls – Tennessee

The youth event for October is a trip to Fall Creek Falls in Tennessee. Since it is over fall break, reservations need to be made now. Cabins are already full, but there are still plenty of sites at the campground and rooms at the Inn available. If you’re interested in going, I recommend making reservations sooner versus later.
Here is a link to the park’s website: http://tnstateparks.com/parks/about/fall-creek-falls
To reserve a room at the Inn, call 1-423-881-5241 or go to https://apps.tn.gov/parks/check_avail.jsp
We will be there Thursday, Oct. 9-Sunday, Oct. 12 and most of the church group is planning to be in campsites located in area A.  I hope some of you can join us for some, if not all, of the days. We will work out more details when we get closer to the date; I just wanted to get this info out so people can plan and make reservations if they were interested.

Cathedral Caverns Youth Event

When: Sunday, June 22 @ 12:00 pm (rain or shine!)
Where: Cathedral Caverns

Update: We had 54 people for the picnic and 48 for the cave tour. It was a great turnout and the kids had loads of fun. We can’t wait for our next youth event. This is such a great success because we have wonderful people supporting our youth.

Thank you to everyone that helped to make this a success.

We are going to meet at Cathedral Caverns and have a hotdog/hambuger cookout at the pavilion. After lunch we are going to take a 1.5 hour cave tour. This is a youth event, but it’s open to the church family. The more people the merrier and we look forward to seeing everyone.

If we have 25 or more people interested in the cave tour, we will get a private tour at 1:45. If we have less than that, we will tag on with the public tour at 1:15 or 2:15. We will be getting a group rate of $10 per adult; kids will be covered by our youth funds. We are also asking each family to contribute a side item, bag of chips, or dessert for the cookout. Remember that even though this is a “youth event,” everyone is invited. It is a good chance for our church youth to build relationships with each other and the adults in our congregation. Look for the signup sheet in the annex.

Get ready to catch some big catfish. We are going to go fishing on the Tennessee river. If you don’t like to fish there is plenty of biking and hiking too. You can bring your fishing poles and I guarantee you are going to catch some fish. We’ll bring stuff for sandwiches, snacks, and drinks.

Let me know if you want to go so we can plan accordingly. This trip is open for youth and adults.

Be prepared to have lots of fun and get some fresh air. We’ll be spending some quality time together outdoors and sharing some new experiences. Our next trip is at “Walls of Jericho” in North Alabama.

  • We’ll meet at the church at 9 am and make this a day trip
  • We’ll have snacks and drinks for the kids
  • I’ll have a sign up sheet in the annex

GCPC is panning several youth activities in 2014. There are several goals that we want to accomplish with the youth events.

  1. We want to create a positive environment for kids with strong adult role models
  2. Tie in a Christian theme with the activities and find parallels with the scheduled activities
  3. Have lots of fun and and build friendships with our church youth

  • 1/19-1/20 (Sun-Mon) – Lock-in at the Alabaster CPC (presbyterial youth event)
  • 2/23 (Sun) – Geocaching on Monte Sano. This is a 2-4 hour outing. Young kids and old kids (50+) alike can participate. We will hunt geocaches on the mountain and get some fresh air. This is a great family/church outing. http://www.geocaching.com/
  • 3/22 (Sat) – Hiking to the “Walls of Jericho”. This is a good day trip and great exercise for the adults and kids.  The Walls of Jericho is located in Skyline/Hytop area. We will start mid morning, backpack a lunch, and get back before dinner. http://www.alapark.com/press/release.cfm?ID=322
  • 4/19 (Sat) – Easter Egg Hunt at the church

Don’t worry, it only takes about 15 minutes to walk there and the snakes shouldn’t be out yet. This time of year the catfish are spawning and you will be so busy trying to keep the rods going. Also, I will fillet the fish there and you get to take them home.
