Shrove Tuesday occurs the first Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It officially marks the end of Epiphany and is the vigil for the starting of Lent. Traditionally viewed as a day or repentance, Shrove Tuesday has become the last day of celebration and feasting before the period of fasting required during the Lenten Season. The name “Shrove Tuesday”, is derived from the word “shrive”, which means to confess and receive absolution. The name denotes a period of cleansing, wherein a person brings their lusts and appetites under subjection through abstention and self-sacrifice.
The first day of Lent, forty weekdays before Easter. The practice of placing ashes on the forehead symbolizes repentance and contrition.
The Season of Lent
The period of forty weekdays prior to Easter, beginning with Ash Wednesday. It was orginally a time to prepare candidates for baptism and became a period of penitence for those who have been baptized.

A little history…sometime around 1987 a challenge was given to the men of the church to host a Valentine’s banquet worthy of the ladies of the church. Well, naturally to impress the ladies the men accepted the challenge and went all out. The men provided their own decorations, created a menu plan, took care of the cooking, serving the meal, and providing entertainment for the banquet. Now some 25+ years later the banquet is still hosted by the men of the church. From the smallest detail to the last rose being handed out, it is all accomplished by the dedicated men of the church to honor their sweethearts. Over the years there have been games, musical performances, and comedians that have entertained the love birds. The evening ends with a traditional sweetheart dance.
When: On Christmas Eve from 4-5 pm
We will host a “come as you are” Christmas Eve Communion. This is a time set aside for families to come and receive Holy Communion in the setting of our beautifully decorated sanctuary. During this time families will be able to experience a quiet time for reflection and what the birth of our Savior means to them and to the world. In the Cumberland Presbyterian Church we practice an “open table,” in which all who are a part of the Covenant Community are invited to the Table of the Lord. So we invite you and your family to come and experience the grace of Christ during this most holy season.
Looking for a safe and family oriented time to spend New Year’s Eve?

The church gathers on Wednesday evenings @ 6:00 for a time of fellowship. It is a great time for catching up with one another and for just being together as brothers and sisters in Christ. There is a small cost by donation for the meal. The meal is followed up with a time song and prayer in the sanctuary. The night concludes with choir practice.
